How to Choose a Garden Hose?

Posted by Jeremy Hoon on

There are numerous types of hoses. Many of them are not for garden use, for example:

Hoses can be classified by how it is used, such as,

  • Water hose. ...including potable drinking water hoses
  • Hot water and steam hose. ...
  • Beverage and food hose. ...
  • Air hose. ...
  • Ventilation hose. ...
  • Material handling hose. ...such as fertilizers, waste water, food
  • Oil transmission hose. ...
  • Chemical hose.

Materials and design: The materials used in each hose differ by manufacturer, even if they can be used for the same purpose. Their structure and shape are different and depend on their design. The strength of each hose is determined by the material used and its quality (high or cheap).

Thickness: Hoses are expensive, must be replaced on a regular basis, and flexes and stretches under pressure surges. A hose is specified by its inside diameter (ID) and, an outside diameter (OD) - thicker walls can withstand higher pressures and their outside diameter (OD) would be greater.

Garden hoses: generally, there is a great variety of garden hoses. You can get the traditional ones, some of which are very reliable and can last for many years, and flexible expandable hoses including those which are kink free, and do not get tangled. These tend to have a shorter life (depending on whether they are regularly used and in rough conditions). Their life can range from less than one month (especially the cheaper poor quality ones) to a few years.

Further, for expandable garden hoses, in addition to differences in size and thickness, there are differences in the number of layers for the inner hose pipe,  and the types of materials used. For example, the inner hose could be made of a variety of materials, although the strongest is likely to be made of some kind of synthetic rubber latex. The strength depends on the quality of latex used and its thickness - the strongest ones have double layer or triple layer latex - but the quality and grade of the latex is what determines durability.

Some hoses can take very high pressures, and are suitable for high pressure washing with a pressure washer, while most hoses for ordinary garden use are not designed to withstand such pressures.  Even these range from those which can only withstand fairly low pressures to those which can withstand fairly higher pressures.

Assuming you have opted to get an expandable water hose, such as that sold by GreenFriendlyHome, what then do you look out for? Here are some of the main factors to consider:

1) Materials: are the materials used for manufacture durable? You would not know the quality of the materials until you have seen the product, and have used it. There will always be a very small percentage that will be defective and therefore the manufacturing process should weed these out during quality control testing. The best quality assurance possible is for the hose to be individually tested at the highest operating pressure it is designed for.

2) Thickness: assuming the material is of the same quality, the thickness is the main factor left to consider. Hoses are generally made of double layer or triple layer latex, and these are generally stronger. If a hose pipe is thin, then making a double or triple layer latex pipe does not help. Some single layer latex hoses can still be found, but these tend to be weaker and will break or burst more easily.

The GreenFriendlyHome garden hose is an expandable garden hose, which uses premium double layer inner hose pipe made of high quality synthetic latex and is protected by extra strength outer fabric, which has been developed after extensive research into the best, thickest and strongest materials available. It is a Joinable Best-In-Class expandable garden hose - which can be extended up to 100 ft (2 hoses) or 150 ft (3 hoses), and possibly up to 200 ft (if water pressure at the faucet is strong enough).
